What I read this «March»
Mar. 27th, 2023 18:26So, the month was mostly spent on other stuff with not much time for reading, so the short answer to this is nothing.
The long answer is also basically nothing, but also a few things.
I read another short story by 孙黯, this one is called 眼眉朝夕, and the title is a little harder to put into words in english, mostly because its very... metaphorical? anyway its another age-gap story about a high-schooler falling for the 28-year-old man he's living with lmao. I quite liked it, the pacing is nice and so is the sort of relationship the two eventually land in. Irl i think age-gap relationships like these are problematic af (even though the dude is 18 so technically he's not a minor, but i digress) but i can separate fact from fiction, and the narrative makes it clear that there isn't a feeling of coercion or an icky power imbalance going on with the younger dude, he's just trying to work though his very new feelings. The ending was kinda funny and kinda sweet. 7/10
I also got gifted an actual, physical, published book for the first time in a long time! It's Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, a gothic horror story set in Mexico in the 1950s. I'm very excited about getting into this one, I got a few chapters in but the vibes haven't been right since so I haven't picked it back up. It's kinda funny to read a book about Mexico in english since all the mexican literature i've consumed up until this point in my life has been in spanish, so it kinda feels like i should be reading this book in spanish as well haha. Anyway the mansion this story takes place in is located in an abandoned mining town up in the mountains and honestly that setting brings me back to my childhood, my grandma lived in a small town an hour-ish away from one of those former-british-occupied mining towns and we used to visit it a lot when we went to see her, so it's nice to be plopped back in a setting that is so familiar to me (but also not really, since this is set in the 50s and not even my parents were alive back then). It also feels kinda funny, but in a good way, to read a story that's so far giving me fall of the house of usher and other such british gothic horror tale vibes but have it be mexican! i'm loving it so far tbh. the main character kinda ticked me off at first but i expect the author had her be like that on purpose, and honestly i warmed up to her in the few short chapters i read so i don't think i'll end up disliking her as much. I expect that once i do pick it up again for good i'll be done with it in one or two sittings.
